A rattle on cold start can be the first sign of a stretched timing chain. Left alone, it can jump a tooth and cause serious engine damage. We diagnose and replace complete timing chain kits in our Northampton workshop, on all makes.
Timing chains are meant to last, but on many modern engines the chain, guides and tensioner wear long before the car is scrapped. Common culprits include BMW N47/B47 diesels, VW/Audi TSI and TFSI petrols, Ford EcoBoost, Mercedes, Land Rover and many more.

We recommend a complete kit: chain, guides, tensioner and sprockets. Worn guides or a weak tensioner are often the cause, so replacing them all prevents the problem returning.
